That also makes it a difficult design to reproduce well. Small changes to the bezel, small-seconds register, case thickness or dial pattern can noticeably alter the character of the watch.

The genuine Rolex reference 52506 uses a 39 mm case in 950 platinum, an ice-blue guilloché dial with a rice-grain motif, a domed and fluted bezel, an alligator strap and a transparent case back. Rolex fits it with calibre 7140, a self-winding movement with a Syloxi silicon hairspring and a stated power reserve of approximately 66 hours. These are specifications of the genuine 1908. They should not be presented as the specifications of a replica unless the replica itself has been independently examined.

The dial is the main comparison point

The ice-blue dial is not simply a flat coloured surface. Its guilloché pattern radiates from the small-seconds area and gives the face depth that changes with the light. Around the minute track, a separate crimped pattern adds another layer of texture.
